Everyday Walls in America: Understanding What Divides and Connects Us with Anand Pandian

CLASS Honors presents the 2025 Panos Family Endowed Lecture in Equity and Social Justice. Anthropologist Anand Pandian examines the everyday walls -- both literal and abstract -- that Americans construct around themselves and others. Drawing from his book "Something Between Us," Dr. Pandian explores fortress-like homes, neighborhood isolation, defensive transportation cultures and "walls of the mind" that separate Americans into different realities.

Anand Pandian is the Krieger-Eisenhower Professor of Anthropology at Johns Hopkins University and current President of the Society for Cultural Anthropology. His books include "Crooked Stalks: Cultivating Virtue in South India," "Reel World: An Anthropology of Creation," "A Possible Anthropology: Methods for Uneasy Times" and "Ayya's Accounts: A Ledger of Hope in Modern India." He is a contributor to "This American Life" and several documentary films about ordinary life, extraordinary art and unusual forms of attention.
